Season 15 premiered Sunday, August 2 on Channel Seven and 7plus, with episodes following on Monday and Tuesday at 7:30pm. The Big Twist: Tones and I’s Secret Surveillance Room
The headline story of Season 15 isn’t a contestant — it’s the format itself. Channel Seven billed this season as “the biggest shake-up in The Voice history,” and it’s not overselling it much. Dance Monkey singer Tones and I has joined the panel alongside returning coaches Kate Miller-Heidke, Ronan Keating, Richard Marx and Melanie C, but she’s not sitting in one of the big red chairs on stage.
Instead, Tones and I is stationed in a hidden backstage room, watching every single Blind Audition without Kate, Ronan, Richard or Melanie C knowing she’s there. If a contestant fails to turn a single chair, Tones has the power to step in and rescue them, pulling them onto a secret Team Tones for mentoring before sending them back out for a second shot at the stage.
She’s called herself “the fairy godmother” of the season, and honestly, the description tracks.

Tones and I’s Rescue Picks
The secret twist has already produced its first two Team Tones members:
Red Roy was the first artist saved. A busker and youth worker from NSW, Red Roy failed to turn a chair performing “APT” on opening night — but Tones saw enough to bring him in, making him the first contestant to ever see her hidden surveillance room.
Jamie Koul was the second rescue. Jamie had reportedly already accepted his run on the show was over when Tones appeared backstage with an unexpected second chance.
Expect this list to keep growing as the Blind Auditions continue — Tones is clearly not shy about using her power.
The Format Change Fans Are Talking About
Not everyone’s sold on the new twist. With teams capped at 8 spots instead of 10, the coaches are turning fewer chairs overall, and under the new format, any contestant who doesn’t turn a chair now walks off stage without a word from Kate, Ronan, Richard or Melanie C — no feedback, no conversation, nothing.
In past seasons, that face-to-face moment after a rejection was one of the more human parts of the show. Losing it hasn’t gone unnoticed. One fan summed up the frustration in a Facebook group, arguing the missing interaction is “basically turning your back on people” and questioning whether the show needed to sacrifice that moment for every unsuccessful contestant just to make Tones’ twist work.
It’s a fair tension: the rescue mechanic gives some rejected singers a real second chance, but it’s come at the cost of a beat the show built a lot of its emotional weight on.
